Pergola vs lattice patio cover
The two are close cousins. Both use beams and an open top. A lattice patio cover is usually attached to the house and built mainly for shade. A pergola is more of an architectural feature, often freestanding, with a more open top and decorative beam ends. In practice the line blurs, and your installer can design something in between.
Attached or freestanding
- Attached pergolas connect to your house and extend your living space straight out the back door.
- Freestanding pergolas stand on their own posts, so they can go anywhere in the yard: over a pool deck, a spa, a fire pit or a garden seating area.
Why aluminum for a pergola
Wood pergolas look great at first but need regular sealing and are exposed to sun, irrigation spray and termites. Aluminum pergolas hold their shape and finish with very little care, which matters for a structure that sits out in the yard year round.
Ways to customize
- Decorative beam end cuts for a more traditional look
- Tighter top spacing for more shade
- String lights or mounted lighting along the beams
- A partial solid section over a seating area
Good fit if you
- Want to define a seating, dining or pool area
- Prefer an open, airy feel over full shade
- Want the look of wood without the upkeep
